Belmont, CA (November 21, 2025) – At approximately 5 a.m. this morning, the Mid-Peninsula Water District became aware of a significant water main break located at 1400 block of Alameda de las Pulgas, near the border of San Carlos, and responded immediately. As a result of the main break, water service to several local schools was impacted and they had to close their doors this morning, including Carlmont High School in Belmont, and three schools in San Carlos: Terra Linda, Mariposa, and Charter Middle School. We sincerely appreciate the patience and understanding of the families affected during this time, as well as the other residents whose water service was affected.

Our staff arrived promptly onsite at approximately 5:00 a.m. this morning, working diligently to uncover the pipe, assess the damage, coordinate with underground utilities, and execute repairs. A 10-inch cast iron pipe that was installed in 1952 ruptured via a lateral split in the pipe, and the repair necessitated the replacement of approximately 10 feet of pipe. Water service was restored shortly after noon, thanks to our staff’s diligence and commitment to resolving this issue as quickly as possible.

Water main breaks like this one present challenge due to aging infrastructure, underground utility conflicts, and other unexpected findings. The Mid-Peninsula Water District was established in 1929, and our infrastructure has grown as the community has grown. Today, the District is responsible for approximately 94 miles of water mains, with an average age of about 52 years, and an average installation date of 1971. Since 2016, we have made substantial investments in our Capital Improvement Program (CIP), completing 31 projects and replacing roughly 30,000 feet (over 5 miles) of aging pipeline. We are committed to investing in our water system to minimize disruptions like today’s water main break.

For more detailed information about our Capital Improvement Program and to stay updated on our initiatives, please visit our CIP page. We are committed to keeping our community informed and appreciate your continued support as we work to enhance our water infrastructure.
